I am Shyamala Gomez, an activist in Sri Lanka. When a country is involved in a conflict, it affects every single woman. Many of the issues they face and the ways they experience them are different, but they share this common painful reality. Generally because of the patriarchal nature of Sri Lanka, women’s issues are not considered issues—they’re non-issues. Being 50% of the population, we need to be taken into consideration. My organization, The Centre for Equality and Justice’s mission is the achievement of gender justice so that men and women live in a society that is free, just and equal. As women leaders, that is what we want—to make sure that as women, our voices are taken into consideration, that we’re not trivialized. It spurs us on to better the lives of the women that we work with and the extremely difficult circumstances that they live in. This acts as a catalyst for the work that I do.
